§ 2.1 ## What Is Keyword Cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization occurs when multiple pages on your site compete for the same search query. Instead of one strong page ranking well, your pages fight each other for position, diluting your ranking potential and confusing search engines.

For example, if you have both a blog post titled "Best CRM Software 2026" and a product page targeting the same keyword, Google must choose between them. The result: neither page ranks as well as a single, consolidated page would. Competitors with one focused page take the top spots.

When Google finds multiple pages from your site targeting the same keyword, several negative effects compound:

If pages genuinely serve different purposes, optimize each for distinct long-tail keyword variations.

#### Use Canonical Tags

Point weaker pages to your preferred page using rel="canonical". Tells Google which version to prioritize while keeping all pages accessible.

#### Noindex Low-Value Pages

For thin or duplicate pages that add little unique value, add a noindex tag.
