§ 2.1 ## What Are Zero-Click Searches?

Zero-click searches are queries where users find their answer directly on the Google search results page without clicking through to any website. This happens when Google displays the answer via featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, calculators, weather widgets, or other SERP features.

**58.5% of Google searches in the US** result in zero clicks — meaning only 360 out of every 1,000 searches send a user to a website. In the EU, the rate is even higher at **59.7%**. This represents a fundamental shift in how search works.

§ 2.2 ## Why Zero-Click Analysis Matters

With AI Overviews rolling out globally, zero-click rates are expected to increase. Early data suggests AI Overviews can reduce click-through rates by 30-60% for informational queries. Position #1 used to capture 28%+ of clicks; that number is shifting as SERP features and AI summaries occupy more "above the fold" real estate.

You need to know which of your keywords are affected so you can adjust your content strategy. You also need to identify opportunities to recapture clicks (by creating content that provides value beyond what snippets offer) or pivot to keywords with higher click intent.

§ 2.3 ## Types of Zero-Click SERP Features

Featured snippets

Paragraph, list, or table answers pulled from top-ranking pages. Owning the snippet gains brand visibility even without clicks.

AI Overviews

AI-generated summaries that synthesize information from multiple sources. Expanding rapidly. Significantly reduce CTR for informational queries.

Knowledge panels

Entity information from Google's Knowledge Graph — companies, people, places. Typically answer navigational queries.

Direct answers

Calculator results, unit conversions, weather, stock prices, sports scores. Essentially unrecoverable — focus your effort elsewhere.

§ 2.4 ## Strategies to Win Clicks in a Zero-Click World

#### Optimize for Featured Snippets

Structure content with clear headings, concise definitions, and formatted lists. Owning the snippet increases brand visibility even without direct clicks.

#### Create Click-Worthy Titles

Promise additional value beyond what the snippet shows. "7 Unexpected Ways to…" outperforms "How to…" against AI answers.

#### Target Transactional Intent

Users looking to buy, compare, or take action click through far more often than those seeking simple answers.

#### Offer Interactive Value

Build tools, calculators, templates, or interactive content that AI and snippets can't replicate.
